For SIRPAUL™, making music has always been personal.

Since launching his independent label Controversial Records in New York in 1998, the singer, songwriter and producer has built his career largely on his own terms, writing, recording and producing a body of work shaped equally by what happens on the dance floor and what happens alone in the studio.

That contrast has always been part of SIRPAUL™'s music. The records can be provocative, euphoric, sexual and unapologetically pop, while the songs underneath them are about identity, intimacy, loss, love, independence and escape. Music has always been another world he can disappear into, and for more than two decades, he has been creating that world for other people to enter too.

The sounds that shaped him came from everywhere. Prince, George Michael, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper existed alongside Depeche Mode, Erasure and New Order. Disco gave way to electro, synthpop and R&B, while the house, acid, rave and club music SIRPAUL™ experienced firsthand in New York nightlife during the 1990s became permanently embedded in his DNA.

Those influences have never translated into nostalgia. They simply became part of the raw material.

Across albums including Switch, Dismantle, Objectified, Music & Me, The Horse, Seventh Star, Intimate Science and Escapist Behavior, SIRPAUL™ has continually pulled those sounds apart and put them back together differently. Along the way, his music moved from New York clubs to television, film and international stages, while he remained fiercely independent and took increasing control of every part of the recording process.

For SIRPAUL™, singer, songwriter and producer were never meant to be separate identities. The production is part of the songwriting. A synthesizer can say as much as a lyric. The right sound in the right place can completely change what a song means.

His 2025 album DOPAMINE brings that history full circle.

Created over three years and dedicated to his family, DOPAMINE began with something deeply personal: the music SIRPAUL™ grew up hearing and the sounds that became attached to people, places and moments in his life. But rather than make a record about the past, he used those memories as a starting point for something new.

Across fourteen tracks, the album moves freely through Italo disco, synth-funk, classic house, acid, electro, ballroom and R&B. 303s and 909s live alongside funk guitars, drum machines, synthesizers and big pop melodies. The references are deliberate, but never precious. SIRPAUL™ isn't interested in faithfully recreating another era. He would rather take it apart, change the context and see what else it can become.

That distinction matters. The sounds of DOPAMINE aren't retro discoveries pulled from a record collection. They're part of his history. He grew up with them. He danced to them. Eventually, he learned how to make them.

And after more than twenty-five years of making records, DOPAMINE finds SIRPAUL™ with nothing left to prove about where he belongs. The freedom in the album comes from somewhere else entirely: knowing exactly what he loves about music and giving himself permission to use all of it.

Instead, SIRPAUL™ does what he has always done: takes the sounds that made him feel something and turns them into something of his own.

Because underneath all the technology, provocation and volume, the constant in SIRPAUL™'s music has always been remarkably human: the belief that a song can change your mood, preserve a memory, reveal something you couldn't say out loud or simply give you somewhere else to go for four minutes.

Sometimes that's intimacy. Sometimes it's escape.

And sometimes it's just dopamine.
